New Therapy Training Program Improves Speech/Language, Cognition, and Motor Impairments Thanks to a munificent grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, the non-profit organizations Orange Grove Center (OGC) and Music Therapy Gateway In Communications, Inc. (MTGIC) have collaborated on a successful project to train local therapeutic professionals, as well as parents and educators, in the use of neuro music protocols for rehabilitative therapy. The protocols, developed in evidence-based research at Colorado State University, are not traditional music therapy (in which goals are socially driven) but are based on neuroscience to improve speech/language, cognition, and motor impairments. OGC hosted a three-day seminar in August 2008 in which therapeutic representatives from multiple local agencies were invited to receive intensive hands-on exposure to the protocols. Dr. Alicia Clair, Dr. Blythe Lagasse, and Dr. Martha Summa-Chadwick instructed professionals in locally established Speech-Language, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy programs in how to incorporate the protocols uniquely into their own programs. An additional half-day seminar was hosted in April 2009 to work with local parents and educators of children with special needs. Because of this generous grant, dozens of professional representatives in the Chattanooga area are now familiar with the protocols and have begun to work with the techniques in their individual environments. 6th Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament Neurosurgeons from 20 of the nation’s top medical institutions battled it out on June 6th in Central Park at the 6th Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament. The Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament has rapidly evolved into a national competition with sponsorship from George M. Steinbrenner, III and the New York Yankees for the sixth consecutive year and a celebrity team led by captains Andy Samberg of Saturday Night Live, actors Jason Schwartzman and Danny Masterson, as well as rock star Julian Casablancas. Jeremy Schaap of ESPN threw out the honorary first pitch. Supported by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, this date has been declared “Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament Day” in the City of New York. This year’s event was hosted by Columbia University and benefited pediatric brain tumor research. Competing teams included the Departments of Neurosurgery from Columbia, Barrow Neurological Institute, Emory, Harvard, Duke, Yale, Alabama, Florida, Penn State, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, NYU, Dartmouth, Thomas Jefferson, University of Pennsylvania, Albert Einstein, and Mt. Sinai. Columbia claimed their third overall championship by defeating Emory in the Finals. Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania put on strong showings to tie for third place.
