Exceptional Parent - August 2009 - (Page 13) AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN A NEW OVARIAN CANCER CLINICAL STUDY SEEKING PATIENT VOLUNTEERS WITH STAGES III-IV OVARIAN CANCER RESISTANT TO TAXANE-PLATINUM THERAPY FOR A CLINICAL STUDY EVALUATING CARNITINE IN COMBINATION WITH DOXORUBICIN (ADRIAMYCIN) TO PRIMARILY DETERMINE THEIR EFFECT ON TUMOR SIZE REDUCTION Scientific laboratory studies report that carnitine, like doxorubicin, destroys ovarian cancer cells. Both together kill more cells than either alone. In addition, many scientific studies report that carnitine blocks the common cardiotoxicity effects of doxorubicin. In addition, carnitine also has broad anti-toxicity activity against a number of toxins including certain anti-cancer drugs. Carnitine is a very safe naturally occurring substance that is FDA Orphan Drug approved for certain carnitine deficiency states and also renal dialysis. Stephen L. DeFelice, M.D. introduced carnitine in the United States and has been continually involved with carnitine research for over four decades, including this current clinical study on ovarian cancer. The primary objective of the study is to measure tumor size reduction over a six month period of therapy. If the response is positive then the patient will continue on this treatment. Patients must be resistant or refractory to both taxane-platinum therapies. Refractory is defined as having tumor growth recur within six months after cessation of taxane-platinum therapy or tumor growth occurring while being treated with this combination. The study will be conducted on an outpatient basis at no cost to the patient. The encouraging news is that both drugs are already available to doctors. If the combination proves effective against ovarian cancer, doctors can treat their patients without having to wait. The study has begun at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center under the auspices of Seton Hall University’s School of Graduate Medical Education Residency Program in northeast New Jersey. The principle clinical investigator is Michael Maroules, M.D., Chief of Hematology/Oncology at St. Joseph’s and Director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at Seton Hall School of Graduate Medical Education. Other hospitals may also participate. The website, www.Carnitine-ovariancancerpromise.com offers more detailed information both for patients and their doctors.
