Exceptional Parent - August 2009 - (Page 21) of my second pregnancy I began having my cervical length monitored and was given progesterone shots to sustain the pregnancy for as long as possible. While my physician used tools like testing cervical length and prescribing progesterone shots, it was important to both my husband and I that we wouldn’t be surprised like we had been with Ryan’s early delivery. To better determine my risk for premature birth, and to determine when, if ever, this would happen again, my physician talked to me about using FullTerm, The Fetal Fibronectin Test. This test determines the presence of fetal fibronectin, or the glue that holds the baby in the womb. When present between weeks 22–35, it means you have an elevated risk for delivering early. Thankfully, all of my test results came back negative, indicating I had a 99 percent chance of NOT delivering in the next two weeks. The test brought me so much comfort, reassurance, and calmed my nerves that the next two weeks would be manageable. I would have to say the ultimate benefit from my repeated negative fetal fibronectin test results was delivering my healthy daughter Kate on June 1, 2006. Having the piece of mind that I would carry Kate to a full term of 37 weeks allowed me to stay calm and have a less worrisome pregnancy. The loss of Ryan and the birth of Kate empowered me to help other women and make a difference for other mothers who had suffered the loss of a child. With the joy that Kate brought to our hearts, my husband and I decided to get pregnant for a third time. Again with the reassurance of physicians’ watchful eyes, we were blessed with a healthy baby boy named Andrew Ryan on April 9, 2008. While many women may wonder why I share my story, I share it so that other women know there are tools available to them to safeguard them from preterm birth and allow them to achieve their dreams of completing their family. Thank you for allowing me to share my story with you. • Identifying Women at Risk of Preterm Birth FullTerm™, The Fetal Fibronectin Test, is a simple, minimally-invasive test that provides high-risk women and their physicians with valuable information about the likelihood of premature birth. According to the March of Dimes, 1 in 8 babies is born prematurely in the U.S., leaving them susceptible to serious health consequences including infection, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities. The FullTerm Test detects the presence of a fetal protein, fetal fibronectin, in the cervico-vaginal discharge of pregnant women. This protein serves as the ‘glue’ that holds the fetal membranes down to the uterus, and women who have excessive leakage of this protein into the cervicovaginal discharge are at risk of delivering early. This FDA-approved test is for women from 22-0/7 to 35-6/7 weeks of gestation who are at high-risk for or experiencing symptoms or signs of preterm labor. This simple and safe test (like a pap smear) can be performed in your doctor’s office and you can receive results in as little as two hours. If the FullTerm Test is negative, a woman has a 99 percent chance of not going into labor in the next 14 days. This means that women can feel reassured that they are not at immediate risk of preterm birth and they can avoid treatment with drugs and other medical interventions such as bed rest or hospital admission. If the test is positive, it means that fetal fibronectin was detected and the woman is therefore at an increased risk to deliver prematurely. This allows physicians to take the proper medical management to delay preterm delivery and optimize outcome for the baby if it is born early (by giving antenatal corticosteroids).
