Are You Caring for Your Husband, Wife, or Life Partner Who Has Special Needs? When it’s your spouse or life partner who has special needs, it certainly raises the importance of maintaining your own health, especially if you’re the primary caregiver. What risks do you face if you become ill or disabled? What if you die? What can you do now to prevent trouble? If a recent illness or accident has changed your lives, this article may provide some direction for you. If you’ve been living with special needs for some time, perhaps you’ll find new suggestions here or be reminded of actions you meant to take. Take care of your own health You turn on the television, pick up a magazine, or even chat with a friend, and you’re reminded to exercise, reduce stress, drink plenty of water, get routine health exams… Are you doing it? Easier said than done! But when you’re caring for someone who depends so much on you, these are more than practical healthcare tips. It’s vital that you find the time to take care of yourself. Make and keep your own healthcare appointments. And work some time into your schedule for relaxation. If your spouse/partner needs ongoing care, get someone—a friend, family member, or home healthcare provider—to step in while you step out to see a movie or get away for a weekend. If your situation allows, have someone take your spouse/partner to a social event or doctor’s appointment to give you a break. You might even find that friends are willing to take some weekly chores off your hands.
