Exceptional Parent - August 2009 - (Page 71) ORGANIZATIONAL SPOTLIGHT TERI, INC., A Class Act By Amy Elizabeth Alexander When visionaries of different non-profit organizations have shared their dream building process with me, they have all had one common belief—the importance of uncompromised quality. They strive to not only fill the gaps of need in so many areas of society that different people have, but fill them with the best quality of resources and services possible. TERI (Training, Education and Research Institute), Inc., is a model example of the values of a non-profit organization for others to follow. TERI, Inc. is a private, non-profit agency that serves the needs of children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities and their families. The programs TERI provides embellish and enrich the lives of their clients by focusing on the individual potential of each person. TERI believes every individual with developmental and learning disabilities has the right to lead a valued, meaningful, and fulfilling life of uncompromised quality in their community. In a society where people with disabilities are often expected to be satisfied with getting only their very basic needs met, TERI’s mission exceeds miles beyond that limited idea and strives to achieve an individual’s level of happiness. TERI’s vision is to be an internationally recognized center of excellence and social change for education, life planning, health and fitness, research, and provision of model programs for people with developmental and learning disabilities and those who support them across their lifespan. Since its inception in 1980, TERI has grown to offer services to meet the needs of many while remaining true to its original goal – quality before quantity. Combining support, advocacy, dedication, innovation and resolve, TERI has offered hope and opportunities to countless individuals and families, and specializes in serving those whose needs cannot be met by other existing programs. TERI goes on to continue their commitment to excellence by setting new standards through establishing and operating model programs, conducting applied research in best practice procedures and offering training and consultation to professionals, families and other community members. Luanne Hinkle, a marketing consultant currently working with TERI, Inc., has only the highest praise for the organization. Luanne’s experience with TERI goes beyond professional; she has a son who copes with autism and has benefitted from TERI’s programs immensely. A past recipient of TERI’s life coaching program, Luanne’s son now aspires to be a life coach himself, offering guidance and support to individuals he once mirrored. One of TERI’s future goals is to have an international internet – based life coach program, accessible at the fingertips to anyone who needs it. A huge undertaking to manifest, no doubt, but TERI believes if you are going to bother to dream, you may as well dream big. The programs and services TERI provides ranges from residential living and a fitness and recreation center to family support services and its Center for the Arts and Adult Education. All were designed and developed on a foundation of uncompromised quality and with the purpose of achieving an individual’s happiness. One of the most impressive and innovative parts of TERI’s is their Life Quality Planning. What is Life Quality Planning? Perhaps the greatest concern of parents who have a child, regardless of age, with a disability is: “Who will care for them when I am gone?” Life Quality Planning addresses this issue, (as well as many others), in the process of working to assure that the family member with special needs are leading happy and productive lives. The three distinct Life Quality Planning Services are: • A Life Quality Plan – A blueprint for the future life of a child or loved one with special needs, detailing the hopes and dreams of the individual, and includes caregiving instructions, as well. It can be done via phone from home for the family’s convenience. • Caregiver Training – Online training for caregivers to learn basic financial, physical, social and educational supports. • Special Needs Life Quality Coach Certification Program – Individuals receive training and certification to support those with special needs in meeting their personal goals for a happy life, and assist them in carrying out their Life Plan. TERI’s dreams continue to flourish. They are currently breaking ground for the Charles R. Cono Center for Research and Life Planning, named after TERI’s biggest benefactor to date. The $35 million project is located on a 20 acre parcel in San Marcos, California, and will accommodate all of TERI’s non – residential programs.
