Using interviews, action footage, and animated sequences that show us how each teen “sees” the world, producer Keith Maitland paints a portrait of what it’s like to be an adolescent coping with friends, family, school, dreams and the challenges of being visually impaired. As host Maggie Gyllenhaal points out, the teens show us “how much we see with our eyes and how much we see with our hearts and our minds.” Through this film, we follow the journey of Chas, a talented 17year-old rapper who lost his sight in the operating room at age 10 and who wants nothing more than to provide for himself and eventually his sisters. His cap, emblazoned with the nickname “1 2 Cee,” says much about his musical ambition and positive attitude. We watch as Meagan, who had cancer of the retina, learns to cross an intersection by herself, works at a bistro and starts planning her career. Denise, a shy 15-year-old who has always had trouble making friends, tries out for a play and lands the role as Cinderella, while Isaac, who recently lost his sight in an accident, vows to become the first blind president of the United States. Like other “Independent Lens” documentaries, this one is painfully real. It’s hard not to feel Chas’ despair as he faces eviction, Isaac’s realization that he has messed up when he’s expelled for inappropriate behavior, Denise’s subtly-voiced disappointment with the fact that the boys she likes are too “aggressive.” Despite its dark side, The Eyes of Me is an eye-opening film that beautifully depicts four human beings doing the best they can to make it in a difficult world. The Eyes of Me premieres on the PBS series “Independent Lens” on Tuesday, March 10.
