Exceptional Parent - February 2010 - (Page 44) United States Military Section Ever since my son Broden was weaned off breast milk, he had been a finicky eater. At one point in time, he only ate yogurt. My friends and family thought it was a stage. Well baby appointments were becoming more stressful. He was not gaining weight. We were panicking because we would do anything for our son. After my husband and I screamed loud enough, our Broden was finally seen by a developmental pediatric team. After the appointment, I cried and cried. Not only did he have autism, but he was described as having failure to thrive and needed to be seen by a pediatric endocrinologist. When we arrived at the appointment, the first thing they did was weigh him. He was 18 pounds at 2 years old. Our hearts sank when we saw the scale, but we were grateful that someone would finally address his weight issue. I don’t think I realized how scared I should have been until the specialist saw Broden. She came over and felt his ribs, his legs, his arms and lifted up his shirt so she could have a clear view of his body. My husband (a Major in the U.S. Army) left the room momentarily to take our oldest son, Hayden, to the bathroom. While the specialist and I were alone she looked at me and said, “Shelly, I’m surprised he’s still here.” It took some time for her comment to sink in. I kept hearing those words over and over. When my husband came back in the room with Hayden, she told us she wanted Broden to have some blood work done and that he could need some help with gaining What You Eat Can Make a Difference By Shelly Huhtanen weight. After the appointment, I started asking friends if they knew of any children with autism who had weight issues. Thankfully, my next door neighbor had a friend whose son was on the spectrum and at one time was very thin. She said her son was now making great strides due to diet. I got her information and contacted her. This started a string of events that would turn Broden around. I learned that a DAN (Defeat Autism Now) doctor was the next person I needed to see. I found one just an hour away and was able to schedule Broden an appointment. Right away after meeting the DAN doctor, I would have to rethink how I fed him. This was going to be so hard, but if it was going to get him better, it was worth it. After tests, we realized that Broden was sensitive to many foods. We learned Broden eating a nutritious snack. N U T R I T I O N He enjoys food and I am confident that the longer we continue this food intervention plan, the more weight he will gain.
