By Shelly Huhtanen I have heard many parents express that they do not want to try a food intervention plan because it seems too overwhelming. I understand. It can be overwhelming, but if you reach out for assistance from those who have experience with food interventions, you may not be as reluctant to try. Many times during the fight for my son, Broden, I have had to say, “I can’t do this myself. I need to find someone to help and encourage me.” We forget, at times, that we are human and need to acknowledge that sometimes, change may not happen when we want it to . I truly believe that each step we take forward, no matter how tiny it is, is a step closer toward reaching our goal. At times when I get discouraged, my husband will say, “Look behind you at how far we have come. Stop worrying about how far we have to go!” I tell myself this quite often when I’m struggling through a meal with Broden. I love the analogy one of my friends told me when she was describing her fight to help her child with autism. She told me her fight felt like she was locked in a dark warehouse with stairwells with many doors that lead to dead ends. In order for her to find the way out, meaning his recovery, she needed to go down many halls that may not lead her in the direction she wanted to go or possibly backtrack to find another route. I’d like to play on this analogy and say that helpful friends along the way, knowledgeable therapists, and inspiring stories acted as a flashlight or gentle voice in her head that said, “Go that way.” In the end, she was able to get closer to the door she was looking for. Making the decision to start evaluating what food your child is eating means you will be taking a step closer to the door you are looking for. Having your child eat healthy food is an important variable in helping your child live a more full life. If your child eats nutritious food that he/she can process, then it can make all the difference in how strong they are to stay the course in improving. You see, it’s not just you who wants them to feel better. They, also, want to feel better. As parents, we need to help them get to where they want to be: healthier, stronger, and happier. Research, research, research: I’ve said many times that my fingers were permanently attached to the keyboard and my husband needed to come by and yank them off for dinner.
