Exceptional Parent - February 2010 - (Page 7) the flight deck” looking for garbage, debris, and “anything that shouldn’t be there” is known as the “FOD Walk,” and it’s as important (if not more) than giving a “thumbs up.” The FOD Walk stands for Foreign Object Debris. It has also been known to stand for Foreign Object Damage or Found On Deck. The significance of the FOD Walk is not only in its goal of reducing the potential damage from flying debris, but also the unifying of the entire flight crew. Mechanics, engineers, pilots, communication officers, supply crew, and others walk “together” for the singular purpose of insuring their unified success. While the removal of the “deck debris” is the primary purpose of the FOD Walk, there are also “systems and processes” geared and investigations launched to ascertain “how” the specific debris found its way onto the flight deck. While one might think it’s a far cry from taking FOD Walks to parenting children with special healthcare needs, there are several insights addressing both “death defying” activities. In fact, in one way the FOD Walk has at least one advantage over the “Exceptional Parent” or “EP Walk.” The FOD Walk is designed and planned prior to green lighting the “take offs.” Parents of children with special healthcare needs don’t have that luxury. For one thing, the “special needs take-offs” are not always planned; often they occur unannounced. The “EP Walk” is often done on unfamiliar flight decks, and often done without the support of an abundant crew that insures that every square inch of the deck is checked for optimum safety. The “EP Walk” doesn’t prevent the “take off” even when debris has been identified. When there is a need to hit the skies, the Exceptional Parent has to go, regardless of the conditions down the runway. Exceptional Parents don’t have the luxury of giving their “thumbs up” to policy makers, school districts, insurance companies, health organizations, and other critical players indicating that they are ready… They are often “not ready,” but have to be at the controls in any event. Probably the biggest difference between the “Top Gun” pilots and “EP Parents” is that the parents don’t have the luxury of crashing planes in simulators or pressing the big button that says, “START AGAIN.” Every take off by an Exceptional Parent is for real, with real consequences and little or no opportunity for another fly over. While the “FOD Walk” for the aircraft carrier crew stands for Foreign Object Debris, for the Exceptional Parent, the acronym FOD is more like “Forge On Daily.” • Rick Rader, MD, Editor-in-Chief; Director, Morton J.
