Autism & Diet: What You Need to Know By Rosemary Kessick Parents have long witnessed the connection between autism and diet, but until recently the science to back up this discovery has been hard to find. Rosemary Kessick, the former CEO of Allergy Induced Autism, a non-profit organization in the United Kingdom, is one of those parents. The mother of a now-grown son with autism and inflammatory bowel disease, Kessick watched her child dramatically improve with an altered diet. Now, in the recently published Autism & Diet, she shares what she learned from years of experience. This little book is packed full of information, including a “whistle-stop” guide to the science and history behind dietary interventions such as low-oxalate, ketogenic and glutenfree/casein-free (GF/CF). Using a conversational style, Kessick does a great job of simplifying daunting medical terms like “betacasomorphin” and “opioids,” and explaining how the body reacts to such substances. Autism & Diet includes step-by-step instructions on how to begin a gluten-free diet, from developing a checklist to restocking your cupboard with safe, unprocessed foods to bracing yourself for your child’s inevitable resistance. It features a helpful chapter on how to educate family members, teachers and school administrators, and another section to help teachers and therapists with lesson-planning and classroom activities that involve glue, wheat-based art materials, and food items offered as reward for a job well done. There’s a detailed list of classic food allergy symptoms; another with sources of gluten and casein, some of which may be surprising; and a food diary to help parents monitor their child’s meals and reactions to food. With so many practical tips, even the most knowledgeable parents are likely to learn at least one new strategy for feeding a child with food sensitivities. Like many books from the UK-based Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Autism & Diet is written in a charming British style. And like other JKP books, it’s right on target for readers here in the U.S. Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking By Kelli Bronski and Peter Bronski When award-winning Boulder, Co., magazine writer Peter Bronski was diagnosed with celiac disease three years ago, he and his new wife Kelli, a veteran of the restaurant business and a lifelong chef and baker, tackled a gluten-free diet together. Within two weeks Bronski felt healthier than he had in 10 years, but there was one problem. After a number of unsuccessful experiments—their first gluten-free pizza, for example, was not only strange-looking but tasted horrible—and feeling the isolation of not being able to enjoy “normal” foods with family and friends, the couple decided there must be a better way. So they set out to create a cookbook with four simple rules: The food must be fresh, simple to prepare, made from scratch and delicious. What’s more, it should have a pleasing texture and be hard to distinguish from the regular versions. Oh, and it must satisfy Bronski’s own cultural food cravings as a New York boy from a Sicilian, Belgian and Polish family who was raised on standard American fare like mashed potatoes and gravy. The result is Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking, a collection of 250 recipes for everything from chocolate chip scones and pumpkin cheesecake to gnocchi and coconut red-curry stir-fry. At first glance, this book might seem to cater to the elite foodie. Flip through its pages, though, and you’ll find plenty of recipes that are not only beautifully prepared, but easy to cook. Interesting sidebars help readers understand the difference between various types of potatoes, learn the best way to cut asparagus spears and make croutons for Caesar salad. The Bronskis also explain how to navigate the supermarket, stock a kitchen with the right tools, and use gluten-free flour as a base for many tasty dishes. This book is an absolute must-have for anyone who wants to maintain a gluten-free diet without sacrificing taste.
